You can save money and time by choosing the proper grass seed based on your location and the amount of maintenance you will provide. Both Pennington and Scotts offer an assortment of grass seed mixtures for different growing conditions and maintenance requirements. Some mixtures also contain fertilizer and/or mulch to help the grass seed to germinate and grow. By comparing the information listed on the seed containers, you can decide which type of grass is right for your conditions.

Selecting Grass Seed

The most important consideration in selecting grass seed is the climate of the area where the turf will be grown – sun or shade, wet or dry soil, how much rain or irrigation it will receive and how cold or hot the temperatures are in the area. Next, you should consider how much maintenance you want to do, such as irrigating, mowing and fertilizing, and treating weeds, insects and diseases.

Read the label on the bag to determine what percentage of grass seed it contains. The label also lists the percentage of other crop seed, weed seed, noxious weed seed and inert materials (stalks, chaff, debris or filler). Choose one that contains a high amount of grass seed -- at least 90 percent -- with a high germination rating of 85 percent or higher.

The growing material absorbs water and surrounds the grass seed to keep it moist, while the fertilizer provides nutrients for quick establishment and future growth.
